چکیده

We present in this Letter the first coordinated radio occultation measurements and ultraviolet observations of the inner corona below 5.5 Rs, obtained during the Galileo solar conjunction in January 1997, to establish the origin of the slow solar wind. Limits on the flow speed are derived from the Doppler dimming of the resonantly scattered component of the oxygen 1032 Å and 1037 Å lines as measured with the UltraViolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). White light images of the corona from the Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph (LASCO) on SOHO taken simultaneously are used to place the Doppler radio scintillation and ultraviolet measurements in the context of coronal structures. These combined observations provide the first direct confirmation of the view recently proposed by Woo and Martin (1997) that the slow solar wind is associated with the axes, also known as stalks, of streamers. Furthermore, the ultraviolet observations also show how the fast solar wind is ubiquitous in the inner corona, and that a velocity shear between the fast and slow solar wind develops along the streamer stalks. Ubiquitous Statistical Acceleration in the Solar Wind

One of the more interesting observations by ACE is the ubiquitous presence of higher energy tails on the distribution functions of solar wind and pickup ions. The tails occur continuously in the slow solar wind, but less so in fast wind. Their presence is not correlated with the passage of shock waves. It is pointed out that statistical acceleration by transit-time damping of propagating magnit...

Coronal origins of the solar wind - sources of steady streams and transient flows caused by solar magnetic eruptions

The magnetic field of the Sun and the plasma properties of its atmosphere, such as temperature distribution, density stratification, photospheric convection and waves in the corona, determine the origin, energetics and evolution of the solar wind. The solar wind comes in three main kinds, as steady fast streams, variable slow flows and transient slow and fast coronal mass ejections. The three t...

New Insights into Solar Wind Physics from Soho

The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) was launched in December 1995 with a suite of instruments designed to answer long-standing questions about the Sun’s internal structure, its extensive outer atmosphere, and the solar wind. This paper reviews the new understanding of the physical processes responsible for the solar wind that have come from the past 8 years of SOHO observations, analy...
